I started the lecture/demo by touching briefly on
the
Humanities (I have a Master's in Humanities
from Central Michigan University).  I thought the
kids should know why this stuff is important to me!
This lead into a quick review of
Maslow's Hierarchy
of Human Needs and how it explains why we are
creative and love finding the beauty of art in life.
I also explained how we as humans
love and need
ceremony in our
lives, from the big ones (like
weddings) to the little ones - like
sharing a cup of tea together!
As an "End of the School Year" treat I decided to introduce my
Jewelry and Pottery students to the pleasure of making, drinking
and sharing a cup of REALLY GOOD tea.  Most of them (if they
have had tea at all) have never
had it made with anything other
than a bag, so I knew it would be fun . . . . .
