This is the incoming ferry
"Emerald Isle" viewed from the
patio of the Shamrock Pub on
Main Street in downtown St.
James.  I took this just before we
left last year.  It was a favorite, so
I knew I wanted to paint it this
year.  Another Rockford teacher
in the class wants it for her
husband and I will probably give it
to her.
The lady on the left is from the island and knows about the Art Sale
at the end of class.  I had taken the photo and she knew that a
painting would probably result.  She and the other couple had been
chatting.  They were leaving for home after their Anniversary trip and
the Island lady took their info.  She sent word to them that she had
seen the painting and they would probably want it.  They did, they
called -SOLD - $75!!
When I watercolor on
Beaver Island I feel
morally obligated to paint
at least one damn boat.
This one was supposed
to be "it" for this year,
but I actually ended up
painting several.
Boat #2 - in drydock - kind of
ugly, but (I thought) an interesting
composition viewed end on like
this and not the way I usually see
or paint things.
Same location as
several others -
the ferry dock in
St. James and the
old Beaver
Islander.
I guess I must
become a
"commercial art
whore" and paint
Ken's Kayaks every
year, because every
year the painting I do
of it sells FIRST!
Our first assignment in class is always a
monochromatic study in either black and white or
indigo.  Last year mine sold right away, and this
year it did, too.  The owner of the pier bought it
for her husband.  What was funny was that she
recognized the dock from the tiny slice of it that I
painted!
